Love Worth Fighting For, Part 8

(Gary is sitting behind his desk in his office looking over some paperwork. Jake and Vicky enter the office. Gary stands and walks over to them.)

Jake: (shaking Gary’s hand) Gary, thanks so much for meeting with us.

Gary: I’m glad you called. Vicky, its great to see you.

Vicky: Thanks. (putting her arm around Jake) Its really good to be home.

Gary: (gesturing for them to sit down) Please sit. Can I get you anything to drink?

Jake: (sitting) No, thanks. Vick?

Vicky: No, I’m fine. Thanks.

Gary: On the phone you mentioned that you wanted to hire me to find out what happened to Vicky.

Jake: That’s right. We want to nail this scumbag to the wall.

Vicky: (taking hold of Jake’s hand) The only problem is that I was being drugged, so I have no idea where I was or who was keeping me there.

Gary: Would you consider hypnosis? Its not 100%, but many people have success with it.

Vicky: Yeah, definitely. I was hypnotized when I was trying to remember who kidnapped me after I married Grant. It helped a lot.

Gary: Great. I can set up an appointment for in the morning. Hopefully we can get an idea of where you were being held and we can start from there. And if you remember anything at all, just write it down. I will do everything I can to find whoever did this.

Jake: Sounds good, Gary. (standing up) Thanks so much.

Vicky: Yes, thank you. We’ll see you in the morning.

Gary: Yep, just meet me here at 9:00 and we’ll get the ball rolling.

(Jake and Vicky exit)


(Vicky and Jake walk into the cottage. Vicky throws her jacket and purse into the armchair by the front door and plops herself down on the couch. Jake sits down next to her, takes her hand and kisses it softly.)

Jake: Feeling okay?

Vicky: Yeah, I’m just a little exhausted. I just don’t feel like this will ever be over until these people are caught.

Jake: (holds Vicky close to him) I know what you mean. But the important thing is that you’re safe, you’re home. We’re going to be fine.

Vicky: I know. And you know how much I love you and the boys. I just feel like - (she pauses, looking away from Jake)

Jake: (he turns her face back to him and looks into her eyes) You can tell me. You know you can tell me anything that’s on your mind, honey.

Vicky: (places her hand on Jake’s cheek) I feel like there is always going to be a void in our lives now. Without the twins. (starts to cry softly) And I don’t think its ever going to go away.

Jake: (hugs Vicky) I know, sweetheart. I feel it too. I think its just going to take some time. And when you’re ready, we’ll have more children.

Vicky: (pulls away from Jake) What did you just say?

Jake: You mean about having more children? (Leans in to kiss Vicky, but she pulls away)

Vicky: You think that is the answer? (she stands up, getting agitated) You think we can just replace our babies by having more?

Jake: Of course not, Vick. That isn’t what I meant at all.

Vicky: I can’t believe you. I never thought you could be that insensitive. Maybe I don’t know you at all. (She runs into the kitchen and out the backdoor into the backyard. Jake remains sitting on the sofa and buries his head in his hands.)

(Jake walks into the backyard and notices Vicky is sitting on one of the swings.)

Jake: (sits on swing next to her) Can we talk for a minute?

Vicky: Sure.

Jake: Honey, I am so sorry about what I said in there. You’re right, I was being totally insensitive to your feelings. I don’t know what I was thinking.

Vicky: I think I over-reacted. I’m sorry I blew up at you.

Jake: (reaches out and takes Vicky’s hand, and pulls her over into his lap) I deserved it. You have been through so much, and the last thing I ever wanted to do was hurt you. I love you so much, Vick. And I just want you to be happy.

Vicky: I love you too. (she kisses him) And to tell you the truth, when you said that about having another baby, I just got scared. I freaked out. I started thinking that if this ever happened again, I just couldn’t take it. I want to have your baby more than anything, but I’m scared Jake.

Jake: Oh, honey. I am so sorry. I know it doesn’t help, but I promise I am never going to let anything happen to you ever again. You are my whole life. You and the boys. And I will die before I ever let anyone ever touch you again. We’re not going to do anything until you feel ready.

Vicky: (wrapping her arms around Jake’s neck) I love you, McKinnon.

Jake: I know our twins can never be replaced. I don’t want you to ever think I thought we could just have another child and everything would be fine.

Vicky: I’m sorry I said that. I know you didn’t think that. Its just so hard for me to get over losing them.

Jake: I don’t think we have to get over them. They’re always going to be apart of us, no matter if they’re physically with us or not. And if we do have more kids, we know they’ll already have two guardian angels looking out for them.

Vicky: (through tears) You’re right. They’re always going to be with us, aren’t they?

(Jake and Vicky stand up and embrace tightly.)

Jake: Let’s go inside and get some rest. We have a long day ahead of us tomorrow.


(Jake and Vicky are in bed, back to back, both awake.)

Jake: (turning and putting his hand on Vicky’s shoulder) Honey, you still awake?

Vicky: Yeah. I can’t sleep.

Jake: Me either.

Vicky: (turns on her side to face Jake) I’m nervous about tomorrow.

Jake: (brushing some hair out of her eyes) Sweetheart, don’t be. Everything is going to be fine. I promise, we’re not going to give up until we catch the bastards who did this to you and our babies. (he pauses) As long as that is what you want.

Vicky: It is. I just don’t want to disappoint you. I know how much you want to make these guys pay.

Jake: Honey, nothing is more important to me than you. If you decide you want to do the hypnosis, I’ll support you. (Jake kisses her cheek)

Vicky: No, I want to. I’m just scared about what I don’t know.

Jake: (holds her closer to him and kisses her head) You mean about the twins.

Vicky: (looking into his eyes) Yes. I want to know, I do. But I also know its going to be so painful to just relive that.

Jake: I’m going to be there with you this time, baby. You won’t be alone.

Vicky: Oh, I’m so lucky to have you.

Jake: I’m the lucky one. (they kiss softly)

Vicky: Will you just hold me tonight? (she lays her head on his chest, as he holds her close again)

Jake: Of course. I’m always going to be here for you. I love you Vick.

Vicky: I love you too.

Jake: Goodnight.

Vicky: (closing her eyes) Night.

(The next morning, Vicky and Jake get to Gary’s office for their appointment.)

Gary: Jake…Vicky, I would like you to meet Paul Wilder. He used to work at BCPD when I was a cop.

Paul: (shaking Jake’s hand, then Vicky’s) Its nice to meet you. Gary filled me in on the situation. I’m so sorry to hear about your loss. I am optimistic that we’ll be able to get some results if the hypnosis goes well.

Vicky: That’s what we’re hoping for.

Paul: Are we ready to get started?

Vicky: (holding onto Jake’s hand) My husband can stay with me, right?

Paul: Of course. (walking over and sitting at table and pointing to a chair) You can sit right here, Vicky.

Vicky: (sits down and takes a deep breath, then looks to Jake) We’ll get through this, right?

Jake: (kisses Vicky on her cheek) I’ll be right by your side the whole time.

Vicky: (smiling) Good.

Paul: Okay, Vicky, I want you to close your eyes and take a couple of deep breaths. I know its hard, but try to totally clear your mind. Just focus. I’m going to start counting backward from 10 and by the time I get to 1, you are going to be 9 months pregnant, and tied up in a bed. Are you ready?

Vicky: (zoned out) Yes.

Paul: Okay, Vicky. 10..9..8..7..6..5..4..3..2..1….Okay, Vicky where are you?

Vicky: (tensing up a little) I don’t know.

Paul: Look around the room, Vicky. Does anything look familiar?

Vicky: My hands and feet are tied. Everything looks a little blurry.

Paul: That is because of the drugs.

Vicky: (getting upset) My babies. I can’t let anything happen to them.

Paul: Vicky, try to focus on what is in the room with you.

Vicky: Someone is coming.

Paul: Okay, who is it?

Vicky: Its a woman.

Paul: Do you know her?

Vicky: No. I’ve never seen her before. She is young, maybe early 30s. Dark brown hair.

Paul: What else can you tell me about her?

Vicky: Another woman just came in. She is carrying a needle. (starts crying) No, get away from me. She’s going to hurt the twins. No!

Jake: Stop this. Bring her out of this right now.

Gary: Jake -

Paul: Shhhh. Don’t you want some answers?

Jake: I can’t take this.

Vicky: Please, I need someone to help me.

Paul: Vicky, what does the other woman look like? The one with the needle.

Vicky: She’s older. Red hair. Mean. She isn’t a nice person. I’m telling her that I am pregnant and she isn’t listening to me. She’s going to stick - owww!

Paul: Vicky, its going to be okay. You’re going to be fine. Calm down. Can you tell me what the two women are talking about?

Vicky: I don’t know. I think they’re arguing about something.

Paul: Can you make out what they are saying?

Vicky: The dark-haired one is talking on her cell phone now. Oh no.

Paul: What is it?

Vicky: (beginning to cry again) I think I’m going into labor. That’s what the shot was. Its too soon. I can’t have them yet. I have to stop it.

Paul: Vicky, stop crying. When I count to five, you will have already had the babies. Okay. Just focus. 1..2..3..4..5…okay, now what do you see. (Vicky’s demeanor changes abruptly)

Vicky: (with no emotion) My babies are gone. I’m empty now. I’m feeling a little sick.

Paul: Do you see the two women?

Vicky: No. I’m all alone. Its just silence.

Paul: Vicky, are there any windows?

Vicky: No. Just one light.

Paul: Anything in the room to indicate where you are?

Vicky: The door is opening.

Paul: Vicky, try to look into the hallway. See if you see anyone or anything. Do you hear anything?

Vicky: Crying. I can hear crying.

Paul: Who is crying, Vicky?

Vicky: A baby. I can see a man. He is holding a baby in the hallway. (she pauses) Wait, I know him. It can’t be- (pauses again) Its Grant.

Jake: (suddenly enraged) What? Grant? Bring her out of this. Right now.

Paul: Vicky, are you sure its Grant?

Vicky: Yes, its him. Is he behind this? What is going on?

Paul: Vicky, I’m going to start counting again. When I get to 1, you are going to be right back here with me, Jake and Gary. You are going to remember everything we have talked about. Are you ready. 10..9..8..7..6..5..4..3..2..1.

Vicky: (opens her eyes) Jake -

Jake: (hugs Vicky and begins to cry) It was Grant.

Vicky: I can’t believe this.

Jake: He’s been alive this whole time. (To Gary) Can we find the scumbag? Oh, I should have just killed him when I had the chance.

Vicky: (grabs Jake’s arm) Jake, the baby. He was holding a baby.

Jake: You mean -

Vicky: What if Grant has the twins? What if they didn’t die? Jake, we have to find them. If Grant has them - we have to get to them.

Jake: We’ll find them, baby. I promise. (he hugs her tightly) If they’re out there, we’re going to find them.

Gary: (on the phone from across the room) I’m on it, Jake. If Grant was behind this, we’ll track him and then he’s going down.
