The Ties that Bind, Part 23

Scene 1
Bay City
It had been a long day for Donna, first Kirkland didn't want to go to school he wanted to call his Mom. But when Donna would call the Apartment in New York no one would answer, she thought it was a bit strange because Vicky had been calling every morning to check in on the boys. Steven finally was able to help Donna with Kirk by promising him that they would call Mom and Jake when they got back from school. Steven was trying to be the Man of the house now that Jake wasn't there but it was tough, it broke Donna's heart to see that little boy trying to take care of everyone when he should have been busy being a kid. How she wished Michael we're here to help.


New York City Hospital
Kris had immediately taken Vicky to the hospital when she started complaining of pains in her stomach. It had been a very long day, she tried and tried to get hold of Jake even when Vicky begged her not to call him.  She reluctantly agreed but only to calm Vicky down. After they took Vicky in for surgery she knew she couldn't keep something like this from Jake. Remembering that Jake said he owned the Herald, she called and spoke with Chris, she had a difficult time trying to get Jake's number but after mentioning that is was about Vicky, Chris immediately gave her his number and offered to do what he could.

Vicky is lying in the hospital bed, sleeping. Kris is sitting beside her. The nurse comes in to check on her.

Nurse: You looked tired.  She's going to be out for a while, why don't you go and take a break.

Kris: Thanks, but I'm all right, I've been trying to get a hold of her husband, so I'll just wait till he gets here.

After leaving Kris's apartment, angry once again that he ran into Vicky. How come she couldn't or wouldn't get the hint that he didn't want to see her, if she knew how much it killed him to hurt her like that, but he thought it was safer than her hurting him again and again like she always seemed to do. He caught a cab and just told the driver to drive and he'll let him know when to stop. Sitting there he allowed his mind to wander back to the night before… the water and how he thought she never looked as beautiful as when she was all wet and flustered, her eyes as blue as the ocean, her skin as soft, how he felt at home when she was in his arms.."Stop it Man" he said to himself, angry that he let those feeling rise in him again he wanted that love to die but somehow knew it would be like trying to hold back a rising tide, it never would end……"Stop" he told the driver, after paying him he got out to walk, maybe the crisp air would get Vicky out of his head again. Looking around to see where he was …mumbling to himself…"Great, Mckinnon, just great" he's ended up at Central park. He picked himself a bench to sit on and watch the crowds and try and shake away the pain that was constantly in his heart.

Back in Vicky's room, Kris has been there anxiously waiting for Jake to show up, finally after several hours she got a hold of Jake and told him to come to the hospital it was about Vicky. He had forgotten to turn his cell phone on, but once he found out he ran like hell to get to the hospital. Rushing through the doors…"What's happened …Vicky…"

Rising quickly to meet Jake.. "Listen to me, Jake…she's alright now, she's resting."

Nurse: Excuse me, are you Mr. Mckinnon?

Jake: Yes…yes.. Tell me! What's wrong?

Nurse: Mr. Mckinnon, your wife is resting now, why don't you come outside and I'll get the doctor to speak with you, okay?

Jake: I want to know now! Is she alright!

Kris: Shhh, Jake, come on let's go outside and wait for the doctor.

Jake: But…but …

Kris leads Jake outside, he reluctantly steps outside.

Jake: Okay what happened Kris, she seemed fine this morning.

Kris: After you left she said she hadn't been feeling well, and was having some pain in her stomach, that's when I brought her here.

Jake: But what's wrong with her?

Kris: Jake, why don't you sit down?  Come on, let's go sit down.

Jake: (shaking her arm of him)  NO..I'm not leaving until someone tells me what happened!

Kris: Fine…fine…Jake ..hmmm, I don't know how to tell you this Jake..

Jake: Just tell me …I can take it..what?

Kris: Jake, first of all she's going to be all right..but it …it seems (softly she says) Vicky had a miscarriage..

Jake: What??

Kris: Vicky was pregnant Jake, she was pregnant and miscarried.

Dr:  Excuse me, Mr. Mckinnon, I'm Doctor Albright, I was the physician who attended to your wife..

Jake: (still in shock) how is she?  Is she going to be alright?

Dr: She's going to be fine, I had to give her a sedative to rest, but she will be fine in a few days.

Jake: Does…..does she know?

Dr: Yes, I told her, she was quite upset, Mr. Mckinnon, but the sedative calmed her down so she could get the rest needed, we want to keep her here for a few days and then she can go home..

Jake: okay…… (he turns to walk away)

Dr: Mr. Mckinnon?.….Mr. Mckinnon?

Kris: Jake?….Jake…are you okay?…where are you going?

Jake doesn't hear Kris or the doctor talking anymore, turning away he walks away, dazed, feeling like he's just been hit by a ton of bricks, stumbling through the hospital corridors all he can hear is miscarriage…..miscarriage, he finds himself outside not noticing that it's raining, dark and cold. What more could go wrong in their lives he thought, seeing the woman who he loved more than life itself lying in that bed, the pain on her face. The shock of finding out that Vicky was pregnant and then the loss of their child, his child the one he has wanted for so long. It was too much for a man to bear, he leans his head back trying to stop the flow, the pain that is beginning to come in, the tears begin to stream down his face mixed in with the rain, he backs against the wall, slowly sliding down crying …"No, please, no…. (we hear in the background)

We cut to Vicky in her hospital room, Kris is sitting on the chair next to the bed watching over her friend.. Vicky is lying on her side facing the wall and crying softly..

Scene 2
Setting: The Herald
Amanda has left Derek speechless…now Katia comes in for the kill..

Katia: Well, Mr. Summerfield…it's about time we meet.

Derek: What do you want?

Katia: You know what I want, and I won't rest until I get it.

Derek: Katia..how long are you going to continue this crusade?

Katia: Till you are ruined and I get control of Jessica's estate.

Derek: Over my dead body.

Katia; (wickedly).. oh Derek don't make that sound like so much fun..

Walking through the door looking at Katia, Patty says…"Hey it's light out, what are you doing here?  I thought you only came out at night??

Katia: Patzzzy…so nice to see you again this morning…

Patti: Ya right…what do you want?

Katia: (looking at Derek) What?  Need another woman to stand up for you, are you using her like you used my sister?

Derek: You came here to say something so just say it and leave

Katia: How's what's her name again..oh ya, how's Amanda this morning?

Derek: What?

Katia: Yes Amanda Cory is her name, right?

Derek: Leave her alone, she has done nothing to you!

Katia: Oh I see now, special isn't she?? And your buddy Jake Mckinnon, I saw that he has done real well for himself..to bad his wife was cozzying up to what?  a Doctor, Racecar driver? Carpenter?..Reno? Roberts? Hmmm what a shame he died that way, wasn't it?

Patti: How does she know ..

Katia: Oh, Patz, don't you remember I have my ways of knowing what's going on in my dear, dear friends' lives…

Derek: Okay, enough Katia! You've spread your joy enough today, so if you don't leave…

Chris: (walking through the door) Have we got a problem in here?

Derek: Were just trying to get rid of an unwanted guest. (looking at Katia)

Chris: I do believe he's asking you nicely, ma'am.

Katia: Ma'am? I'm going, remember Derek you know I won't go away until I get what I want….


Scene 3
Setting: Hospital Room

Kris is sitting beside Vicky's bed, wanting to be sure that someone is there when she wakes, worried that Jake wont come back after hearing the news. Vicky still feeling the effects of the sedative fell back to sleep. Jake stands outside of the door, not sure what he's going to say, do, all he knows is that he has to be there when she wakes up, he has to try and set things straight...he wipes his eyes takes a deep breath and pushes the door open..

Kris: Jake? (getting up from her chair) you came back..

Jake: (speaking quietly) Yeah, I just needed some air…how is she?

Kris: She was awake awhile ago, but fell back to sleep again, she's still on a lot of medication.

Jake: Thanks for staying with her, Kris, I'm not sure what would have happened had you not been there, thanks a lot…I should have…(his voice trailing off)

Kris: Are you okay, Jake?

Jake: (brushing off her question) We need to worry about Vicky… walking to the side of Vicky's bed……"I need to call Donna I guess.".

Kris: why don't you let me do it Jake, why don't you go back to your apartment and rest, I think Vicky is going to sleep through the night..go on I'll stay with her.

Jake: (finally taking his eyes off Vicky, he looks at Kris)  No, I'm not leaving…I've left to many times before..you go Kris you've been here all day, you need the rest and work is probably calling…go on, come back in the morning. I'm sure we'll still be here…

Kris: Are you sure?  I can stay, Jake, we can talk if you need to?

Jake: Kris, I appreciate all that you have done for Vicky and me, but I'm sure … I want you to go home. I'm not leaving here again, I want to be here when she wakes.

Kris: Jake, she's going to need you…….. now more than ever..

Jake: I need her too, Kris…I didn't realize it, but I need her so much.

Kris: Okay, you will call me if you need anything..you have my number right??

Jake: Yeah, I do…go on and Kris (he gives her a hug)…..Thanks again..

Kris: Anytime Jake..you two just take care of each other..

Kris leaves, Jake turns around to look at Vicky, he walks over to the side of her bed, watching her sleep, she looks so pale..he leans in closer and sees that a tear in the corner of her eye is falling down her check, gently he wipes the tear away with his fingertips and brings those to his lips and gently kisses them.."honey I'm going to stop those tears, …(fighting through his own tears he says)…Remember what Bridget said…Rely on Jake.


Scene 4
Setting: Sally is at her apartment, fixing coffee and toast, the doorbell rings.

Sally: Hi Tom, I'm glad you could come..

Tom: Well, when you called me at 4:00 this morning I knew it had to be important, what's wrong? Are you all right?

Sally: Yes, yes I'm fine, come on in..

Tom: This isn't about last night with Nicole is it, because I ..

Sally: No, no this isn't … would you like some coffee?

Tom: Sure, that would be great..

Sally: Black, right?

Tom: (he goes to sit at the counter as she makes his coffee) Yes, that's fine…so Sally why did you call me over this early?

Sally: Would you like some toast with that?

Tom: No, this is fine, you didn't answer my question, why did you call me over here?

Sally: (she sets his coffee down and sits across from him)  Well, I had a dream last night..

Tom: What?…you called me over here this early to tell me you had a dream? (he starts to laugh)… What? You want me to check under the bed and closets for that green monster?

Sally: Well, if you don't want to hear it.. (she starts to get up, but he puts his hand on her arm)

Tom: No..no please, please tell me what it was about.

Sally: Only if you wont laugh..

Tom: I won't laugh, I promise, now come on tell me what it was about.

Sally: Well, it was about you and me….actually more about you.

Tom: You had a dream about me?

Sally: Yeah, yeah, I had a dream about you.

Tom: Oh really now… and in this dream what was I doing? I was tall, dark and handsome, right?

Sally: You're laughing.

Tom: No, No I'm not. Go on, what happened?

Sally: Okay, I'm just going to say it… I dreamt that you and Shari ran off together..

Tom: What? Me and Shari?  You do know she's a married woman, don't you?

Sally: Of course I know that, it just seemed so real.

Tom: (sitting back in his chair with a grin)…Me and Shari, you say . . .  hmmmm . . .  now that would have been interesting..

Sally: (she gets off her chair and turns over to the sink)  This is not going how I planned…

Tom: (gets up and walks around the counter to her) What do you mean not going how you planned?

Sally: This is so hard for me..

Tom: (he gently grabs her arm and turns her towards him) Hey now…come on, you can tell me, what do you want to say?

Sally: (shes standing before him, not looking at him but just staring at the button on his shirt) I just wanted to say….that….that…

Tom: (softly says) yes?…

Sally: Well, I, it's just that I finally realized that I….that I…

Tom: you what?

Sally: Ugh! She reaches her arms around his neck, stands on her tip toes and plants a kiss on his lips, shocked at first, but not for long he responds in kind to her kiss, he wraps his arms around her waist and pulls her closer….


Scene 5
Setting: Carlinos

Amanda has come storming through the door and plops herself down on a stool at the counter. She flips open her folder and is signing forms and slamming papers here and there..

Paulina: Hmmm . . .  I see we're having a good morning, aren't we?

Amanda: Men! I don't know how you do it Paulina…

Paulina: They sure know how to push your buttons, don't they? Let me guess this has something to do with Derek, right?

Amanda: You know it would seem to me if you were seeing someone else you would have the decency not to try and pick up another woman!

Paulina: What? You've lost me, honey…now slow down and tell me what happened.

Amanda: Oh alright….I just found out that Derek is seeing someone else and apparently has been for a while.

Paulina knowing the answer to this question but wanting to see Amanda's reaction anyway says "And why does this upset you so much?

Amanda: Oh, it doesn't upset me at all, that man can do whatever he wants

Paulina: Oh really now, and you're not upset in the least bit?

Amanda: No, of course not, I would just appreciate it if he would not do it on company time is all!

Paulina: Oh, I see, okay…well, Amanda, I think you need to march yourself right back in that office and tell him so!


Scene 6
Setting:
Jake is keeping a vigil on Vicky, not wanting to fall asleep just in case she wakes up. He's stroking her hand with his, he begins to talk to her…"Hey, remember the last time we were here in NY…it was you and me, the kids, remember? Central Park in the summer, we ate hot dogs, sailed boats, went to a Yankee's game…we had fun didn't we? You told me that was the day you realized you were in love with me (he smiles, leans over and kisses her forehead)… I'll never forget that time, Vicky, as much as I wanted to wipe it all out I couldn't, you're in too deep Vick…(he puts his hand on his chest).. you've got yourself too deep in my soul to ever let you go.."

Vicky begins to stir and wake up, "Where am I?

Jake: (he pushes a lock of hair out of her eyes)..It's alright honey, you're okay, you're in the hospital..

Vicky: Jake? (remembering last night, she rolls to her side)…what are you doing here, Jake?

Jake: Hey there... (he sits on the edge of the bed) look at me…

Vicky: Kris called you, didn't she?

Jake: will you look at me?…Vicky doesn't look at Jake, she cant bare to see the pain in his eyes after hurting him so much.

Jake: Okay then just listen to me, Vick, listen…I know what happened and the only thing I'm concerned about right now is you…I think …..I think we need each other right now..

Vicky (starts to cry)… I'm so sorry, Jake, I'm so sorry….

Jake: "Come here"…..he gently grabs her shoulder to turn her around, hesitant at first but hearing the softness in his voice she turns around and buries her face into his shoulder "Hold on, Vicky..I've got you.. …it's okay ….it's okay (as he strokes her hair, he starts to cry as well)..it's okay honey..I wont let you go..
