Our World, Part 2

Scene one—Our World Caf

Anne: (sits down at a booth as Katia enters the caf) Hey Katia, over here!

Katia walks over to the far side of the caf, on her way she passes her stepsister Amanda.

Katia: I’m so glad you could make it. I want to talk to you guys. (sits down across from Anne) Is Sydney here yet? (looking around)

Anne: (shaking her head) No. Not yet—she should be here anytime.

At that moment Sydney walks through the door and comes and sits down by her friends.

Sydney: You called? It sounded pretty urgent.

Anne: Yeah Katia, what’s up? Why did you call us down here?

Katia: (looks mischievously at her friends) I have a plan. It’s the best—guaranteed that we’ll all succeed.

Sydney and Anne look at each other questioningly.

Anne: What?

Katia: (smiles) Just listen and I’ll explain everything…

Cut to Amanda and Linda, caf

Amanda: (sits down in front of the counter) So business is really taking off. (looks at all the customers; almost every seat is taken)

Linda: You know, I just hope it keeps up. I really don’t know what else I’d be good at if this doesn’t work out.

Amanda: Hey—it will. You’re great. (she’s interrupted by the ring of her cell phone; takes it out of her purse; to Linda) Excuse me…

Linda: (taking the hint) Sure, (walks back into the kitchen)

Amanda: Hello?

Voice at the end of the line: Hey.

Amanda: Danny! Wow, what a surprise!

Danny: Thought you might like it. I got back from California earlier than I expected. (pause) Actually, if you’re free this afternoon, could we meet?

Amanda: (laughs) For you, always. What time?

Danny: How about we meet at my place, one? Is that too soon?

Amanda: (sweetly) No, I mean—that’s great. I’ll go right over there. Fine. Ok, bye. (she closes her phone and stands up; calls into the kitchen) Bye Linda!

She puts her purse on her shoulder and walks happily out of the caf

Becca and PattiM enter as Amanda leaves. They walk up to the counter and greet Linda.

Becca: Hey! This place looks great!

PattiM: Yeah, it does.

Becca: (hands two bags over the counter to Linda) So here’s the few things I promised to drop by today.

Linda: (takes the bags) Thanks Becca, I really appreciate it. Things are settling down a little bit, but it was crazy this morning. Business is really taking off! I just hope it lasts.

Scene 2—Top O’ the World Modeling Agency

Nicky: (runs into Nicole’s office; Nicole is sitting at her desk) Hey! (out of breath)

Nicole: (slowly looks up from her papers) Nicky…

Nicky: Look—before you say anything let me explain. Well, actually there’s not that much to explain…I just, I lost track of time. If you want to fire me, go ahead I’ll completely understand.

Nicole: (looks at Nicky for a moment) Nicky, look, I’m not going to fire you. Everyone makes mistakes. The only problem was, this morning we had no photographers. Luckily, though, we were able to pull through.

Nicky: (feeling terrible) Oh, no, Kris wasn’t here either? What did you do?

Nicole: (hesitantly) Well, that’s not important anymore. Just try to be on time next time, ok?

Nicky: (slowly nods as she leaves Nicole’s office) Sure.

Scene 3—Sally’s home

Amber walks up the front steps to her aunt Sally’s bungalow. She takes a deep breath and then knocks on the door.

Minutes before, Sally just returned home from the agency. She got up from the kitchen table and opened the door. She was her niece standing there and the angry expression on her face.

Sally: Amber, sweetheart? Is something wrong?

Amber: (frowns, then finally responds) It’s my mom. I can’t live with her anymore.

Scene 4—Danny’s apartment

Amanda knocks on the door. It is immediately opened by Danny.

Danny: I missed you (gives his girlfriend a kiss) Come on in.

Amanda sits down at the table across from her good friend.

Amanda: So how was your sister’s wedding?

Danny: (looks down) Actually…it didn’t go quite as planned.

Amanda: (confused, seeing the hurt in his eyes) Danny? What happened?

Danny: (swallows hard) My sister didn’t get married. (looks at Amanda) She…she’s dead.

Amanda: Oh my God, Danny (she takes a hold of his hands and rests her hand on his cheek) …How…?

Danny: She was killed in a car accident. And Jamie’s pretty messed up, you know they were going to be married—(looks at his watch)—tomorrow. Paige’s funeral is on Friday.

Amanda: (feeling Danny’s pain) Dan, I am so sorry. I know how close you two are…

Danny: (correcting her) Were. My mom’s flying in Thursday. I wanted to ask you, you know if you wanted to, if you’d come with me…to Paige’s funeral?

Amanda: (thinks for a moment) Danny, I don’t want to sound selfish and…and immature, but I don’t think I can go to her funeral.

Danny: (confused) What? Why—why not?

Amanda: Come on, Danny, the last funeral I went to was my mom’s. I don’t think I’m ready to attend someone else’s funeral, I mean, there’s all these feelings I’m just not ready deal with. I’m sorry.

Danny: Amanda, you’re mother died six years ago. How long are you planning on waiting? I mean you’ve never even visited her grave.

Amanda: (looks down) I don’t know. I guess there’s a part of me that’s still holding on. That little girl inside of me—just waiting for her return. When God realizes what a terrible mistake he made when he took her, he’ll send her back to me, just like he did my dad. And I’ll have my mom again…(slowly frowns) I know it sounds crazy.

Danny: (puts his hand on hers) No it’s not crazy. But it’s never going to happen. You have to let go.

Amanda looks into Danny’s eyes and tries to force a smile.

Amanda: But I don’t want to let go.

Danny looks away, and Amanda places a hand on her forehead.
