What's Meant to Be, Part 2

Scene 4

Jake is going through the house looking to make sure that everything it out before the open house.

Jake:(opening the door to the house) Why are you doing this to yourself? Why are you walking in this house? Are you trying to make yourself miserable? (As he walks in he sees a welcome home sign with balloons all around it) Welcome home...without you I dont have a home Vic(remembering their wedding day) "no matter where we are as long as we are together thats home"...what if we arent together, I never thought about that...where is home if you arent around Vic? (As he goes to sit in a chair he sees a letter from Vicky) What? You never...how did you...when did you do all this...you are, were, the most amazing woman in the world (he opens the letter and begins to cry, we here Vicky's voice as Jake reads)

Vicky: Dear Jake, I thought I would do a few surprises for you and the boys to make this house seem more like a home for the four of us and our little girls! Around the house I have a few little gifts for you and the kids! Make sure you open them together just like a family should!! I love you Mckinnon and I know we are all going to be so happy here!! All my love, Vic

Jake:(sobbing) Why Vic...why did you leave, we were a family! You, me, Steven, and Kirk! I want it back Vic...I want to see the boys run into this house and jump on top of me, I would give anything to see you trying to cook something in the kitchen...(shaking his head) I cant do this...I cant keep remembering how great it was...its over...that life is gone (looking at his watch) Its 6 oclock, Julia will kill me if I am late...I guess I will get all of this stuff out tomorrow...(looking at the letter) what about the gifts...I cant open them without the boys...I cant think about this right now, I'll worry about it later (he takes the letter and leaves)


Scene 5

(Jake shows up at the restaurant and sees Julia sitting at the table, as he looks at her he realizes that he has to let go of the past or he could lose the best thing that has happened to him since Vicky died)

Jake: (walking up to Julia) Hey beautiful, sorry Im late I just lost track of time

Julia:(giving him a kiss on the cheek) I stopped by your office earlier and Patti said that you never came back to work today, were you at the house the whole day?

Jake: Yeah, I guess I just needed to take one more look around, I just didnt realize how late it was getting (beginning to feel uncomfortable)

Julia: Well how did things at the house go? Did you get everything settled with Becca?

Jake: (thinking about the letter) What? Ohhh the house, yeah everything is settled

Julia: Jake are you okay? you seem a bit distracted.

Jake: Yeah Im fine, lets order (waving his hand at the waitress)

Kris: Hi my name is Kris and I will be your waitress tonight, can I get the two of you a drink?

Jake: Ill just take an ice cold beer, Julia?

Julia: Ill just have a glass of water with a lemon, thanks

Kris: Okay Ill give the two of you another minute to decide what you want to eat while I go to get your drinks

Jake: (laughing) Just water?

Julia: (smiling and taking his hand) One of us has to drive tonight

Jake:(with an acsent) So what is your preference tonight my lady?

Julia: Most definitely the steak, what about you?

Jake: Well you read my mind, steak is exactly what I was thinking

Kris: here are your drinks, are you ready to order?

Jake: Yes, we will have the steak, well-done, a baked potato, and a 2 salads with Ranch dressing

Kris: Okay, I will have your salads out in a minute

Julia: Sooo....how was your day?

Jake: (getting a little agitated) I thought we already talked about this, what do you want me to say Julia, I went to the house I saw the house, I went inside the house, end of story

Julia: Something must have happened for you to spend the whole day there, Jake we dont have to talk about this if you dont want to

Jake: (calmly) Look, Im sorry, I just dont want to talk about it, nothing happened really, everything is fine (remembering the letter, "open them together just like a family should") Actually something did happen Julia

Julia: what?

Kris: (Interrupting) two salads with ranch dressing, can I get you anything else?

Jake: No thanks(acting like he has forgotten he was about to say something)

Julia: Jake, what were you about to say, what happened at the house today?

Jake: Nevermind, I dont want to talk about it

Julia: Jake, you are scaring me

Jake: (getting out of his chair)Im sorry, I need to make a phone call Ill be right back

Julia: Who are you calling

Jake: (already walking away) Ill be right back


Scene 6

Jake: (Dialing the operator) Yes I would like to place a long distance phone call to London....

Operator: Please dial your number at the tone

Jake:(Dialing number, phone rings) Come on pick up..

Steven: Hello

Jake:(with a big smile) HEY STEVEN, its Jake

Steven: JAKE!!! Hey Kirk, go pick up the phone in the other room, its Jake!! Ohhh Jake, we've missed you!!

Jake: Ohhhh I've missed you too!!

Kirk:(innocently) Jake? Is that you?

Jake: Yeah little man, its me, how are ya?

Kirk: Im okay, I miss you though!!

Jake: I miss you too, Steven you still there?

Steven: Yeah Jake I'm here

Jake: Good, hey listen guys, I was thinking that its time I came and visited my two favorites guys!! I have something I need to show you!

Steven: Really Jake, you are really gonna come?!!?

Kirk: You promise!?!

Jake: Yeah guys, I promise, I have to get a plane ticket and work some things out in town so I can take some time off but I should be there in a couple days, okay?

Steven and Kirk: (mainly Steven with Kirk repeating) Okay Jake, we will see you soon then, we love you Jake!!

Jake: (smiling) I love you guys too!! See ya soon!! bye (going back to the table)


Scene 7

Jake: Sorry, I hope I didnt keep you waiting too long

Julia: Jake, whats wrong? You are avoiding talking to me, I know something is going on with you

Jake: Im sorry, I just had to call the boys

Julia:(surprised) You mean Vickys boys?

Jake:(beginning to get angry again) Yes Vickys boys, you forget they were my boys for awhile, Im the only father they've ever really known, I promised I would be there for them and I have let them down

Julia: Im sorry Jake, I didnt mean to sound rude, I know those boys mean the world to you, I would love to meet them sometime

Jake: Yeah maybe sometime

Julia: (trying to change the mood) So how were they? I bet they were happy to hear from you

Jake: Yeah they were, I told them I would come up and see them in a few days

Julia: Ohh really? When?

Jake: I dont know why?

Julia: No reason I just wanted to know

Jake: well Im not quite sure yet, I have to talk to Lucinda

Julia: Jake are you sure you are okay?

Jake: Why do you keep asking me that? Is there a problem with me wanting to see MY kids? Yes, I said it, they are MY boys!! Do you have a problem with that? Im sorry if you do, but they are MINE and I want to see them, they are the only thing that I have left of Vicky (pausing noticing that he is hurting Julia as she is beginning to cry)(he takes her hand) Julia...I....Im sorry I really am, I just been really stressed lately and with the house and everything....look I know its no excuse I just need to get away for a couple days!!

Julia: Jake I understand, I really do, take as much time with your boys as you need, I will be waiting for you when you get back!! (getting out of her chair) Look I think I better go, Ive lost my appetite, you think you can make it home okay?

Jake: sure, look I really am sorry if I hurt you I really dont mean to, I promise things will get better for us

Julia: Its okay Jake (leans down and kisses him) Im not going anywhere!! (walks off)

Kris: Here are they steaks...Im sorry is your friend not staying?

Jake: No Kris, shes not staying, and I dont blame her one bit (leaves the cash on the table and walks off)

Kris: Wow that man is really hurting and something tells me that it isnt because of that woman!!
