(Later that day Vicky is in the nursery measuring the windows for curtains. She is standing on a ladder when Jake comes in.)
Jake: VICTORIA! (Jake yells almost scaring Vicky half to death.) Are you nuts? (He reaches up and grabs her around the waist bringing her down off the ladder.) You could fall and hurt yourself or the baby.Vicky: Using VICTORIA. You must be really be mad at me. Jake, you scared me half to death. Baby, I am just pregnant. I am not going to break. Relax. I was just measuring for curtains. You know we need to start thinking about this room.
J: Vicky, why can't you just humor me and let me believe that you will break. You are not just pregnant. You are just pregnant with my baby.
V: Our baby Mister. Our baby. She smiles at him and he just melts.
J: Vic. (He whines) I need to know that you are not going to do anything to hurt yourself or this baby. I couldn't stand it if anything happened to you or her.
V: (She takes his face in her hands.) You are the sweetest man I have ever known. I am fine, Jake, just fine. I even drank extra milk today. I would never do anything to hurt this baby. She is my world. ....You are my world. Now stop worrying about me. This is the most natural thing in the world.
J: (He kisses her again)... Please just stay off ladders. Humor me Vicky please.
V: Okay. Okay.... God, you are as nervous as a cat in a room full of rockers. I will just sit on the couch and wait for this baby. (She laughs and kisses his face with a million tiny kisses.)
J: Between you playing FBI agent running off to Chicago and standing on ladders. I am going to be a nervous wreck by the time this baby comes..
V: Jake, you can't just lock me in a tower until this baby is born
J: Don't tempt me. (He kisses her again as she heads out of the room. He follows her down the stairs.) So, how was lunch with Marley and the girls. How did Kirk do?
V: He was fine. He actually had an okay time I think. You know, Jake, something weird did happen. She starts to pace around the room appearing really agitated about something.
J: Yeah, go on, something weird happened and Marley was involved. That is a news flash. Something must have happened to get you so bugged.
V: Jake, come on, you are not being fair. (She continues to pace around the room. Just then Donna comes into the room)
Donna: Hello, darling. (She kisses Vicky on the cheek.) I just got off the phone with Marley. She said lunch was wonderful but that you got sick.
J: You got sick? Vic, why didn't you tell me?
V: Jake, come on, it was just a little morning sickness. Marley made the weirdest sandwiches for the kids and the combination just got to me.
D: Darling, what did she make?
V: Peanut butter, Bananas and Marshmallow.
(Just then Donna drops the cup of coffee she is holding. It splatters all over.)
D: Oh, god, darling, I am so sorry. Let me go get a wash cloth with some seltzer. (heads for the kitchen visibly shaken.)
V: Well, Jake, that is actually exactly how Becca reacted, too. She went paste white and then was completely zoned out. What is so special about that sandwich?
J: What do you think it is that would freak her out so bad? What is Marley up to?
V: Jake. I don't know that Marley is up to anything. I just don't understand it. Becca was terrified when she saw those sandwiches. It must have triggered a memory from her past. Maybe it was something scary or ...J: Vic, you promised no more investigation...
V: But Jake you've got to admit, that is a really strange reaction to food.
Donna is in the kitchen pretending to be gathering stuff to clean the carpet when she over hears this. She says to herself quietly, 'Marley what are you up to? You know you ate those sandwiches when you were little.' She then goes back into the nursery with Jake and Vicky.
V: That's okay, mom. I was just telling Jake about lunch and how weird Becca got over lunch.
D: Darling, what do you mean weird?
V: Well, she just got really zoned out when Marley started to mention them.
J: Well, maybe she just remembered something from when she was young.
D: (Sounding shaky) Well, darling, isn't that a funny reaction.
J: I get that reaction sometimes to Vicker's cooking.
V: Hey, watch it, or I will cook tonight.
Vicky is still pacing around the room and Donna is fidgeting nervously with the rag.
D: Well, maybe it is just something that brought up a bad memory. You know, darling, she didn't exactly have a nice childhood.V: I know, but there is something more to it. Because then something else happened. They went into the kitchen to get lunch and they were talking. I did over hear her say that she did make those sandwiches for Josh. She said her mom made them for her. Well didn't she tell us her mom died when she was really young. How would she remember what her mom made?
J: well, maybe, that is it. Maybe she remembered her mom and that upset her.
V: I don't know, Jake, I got a weird feeling.
J: Okay, super spy, what now?
V: Stop teasing me.. Jake, there is something really going on here and I want to know what. Where is your computer? I want to go online. Are you going to help me?
J: Vic, why can't you just be a good little pregnant girl and do what other pregnant women do. Pick out baby bedding and strollers and that thing that the baby hangs from around your neck thing (he moves his hands around his chest trying to describe a baby carrier) that stuff . Why is it you can never leave well enough alone? (He grabs her playfully and kisses her neck.) You think I can resist you? What do you want me to do, Oh, super spy?
V: (Smiling back at him.) Jake, come on, I am serious.
J: Okay! Okay, what else happened?
D: (acting awfully curious now about what is going on) Yes, dear, what happened?
V: Well, then, there was another thing. I can't explain. There was a picture that no one said they drew... That is really strange. Again Becca had this vacant look on her face. She looked like she had seen a ghost
J: So what is the big deal with a picture?
D: What was the picture of darling??
V: It was a tree house and it was a really good drawing. Not like our tree house, much more elaborate and lot of details.
D: (suddenly gets a flush feeling on her face.) A tree house? What could that mean?? Why would that matter to anyone??
V: I don't know, Donna, but when the boys came running out with it both Marley and Becca got very strange. I just don't get what is going on.
J: Vicky, I think you are watching too much Law and Order. You imagination is running away with you.. (He laughs.)
V: Laugh if you want but I think something is going on.
D: I think Jake is right, dear . No use worrying about this stuff. You have a baby to plan for. Excuse me now, dear, I need to take care of some stuff at the Harbor club.
V: Why do you need to go there so late? Can't it wait until morning?
D: No, dear, it can't. I must go now. (She quickly runs out the door.)
V: Well, she was in an awful hurry to get out of here. What is up with her, too? She is acting all weird too. Jake, I swear something is not right here. All these people have nothing really in common amongst themselves and yet they are all having the same reaction to certain things.... I don't get it.
J: Come on, Vic, let it rest. I can think of a much better way to spend the rest of our evening... he takes her in his arms and kisses her running his hands all up and down her belly.
V: I guess you are right we can do this tomorrow. But mark my words something strange is going on... (she kisses him back.)
J: (losing himself in her kisses.) Yeah, something strange.. he picks her up and carries her to bed.
(Next scene opens in Jake and Vicky's bedroom in the morning. Vicky is kissing Jake awake.)
Vicky: Jake . . . Jake . . . Are you ready?
Jake: (excitedly) What? Huh? Oh, is it the baby??? Yeah, let's go . . .
Vicky: (laughing a little) Whoa! Slow down! We've still got a few months to go on that one!
Jake: Oh. Yeah. (looks at her and they kiss) Well, in that case . . . I am definitely ready . . . (kisses her again)
Vicky: Jake . . . (kisisng him) I meant . . . (kisisng him still)
Jake: What? What did you mean, Oh, most incredibly sexy mother of my children? (hands on her shoulders about to take her nightgown straps down)
Vicky: (smiles) That's good, Jake. Keep that up when I get huge and feel like the most unattractive woman on the planet.
Jake: You'll only be more beautiful, Vicky.
Vicky: You're going to be really good at this, aren't you??? But, seriously, are you ready to go to Chicago? Cause you know I thought . . .
Jake: Chicago? What's in Chicago?
Vicky: I thought we could . . . you know . . . Becca?
Jake: Awww, come on, Vick. Can't you leave it alone?
Vicky: You know I can't and besides you did admit it was pretty weird.
Jake: Yeah, but. . . tell me why again we're doing this?
Vicky: Because we have to find some way to prove to Marley that Becca isn't who she thinks she is. I think it's the only way . . . for both of them.
Jake: I will admit I am a little worried about Marley's reaction to Becca.
Vicky: Yeah and what if it gets worse . . . the truth might . . . will . . . it will help both of them. Besides, I don't care what Becca says. Someone has got to be worried about her. Someone has got to care where she has been all this time.
Jake: All right. Go over this for me again . . . where are we starting?
Vicky: (straightening up) I thought . . . Pizza!
Jake: Pizza? Now you're hungry?
Vicky: Yes, but . . . I was actually thinking specifically of one pizza in particular.
Jake: Oh. That "Antonio's" or whatever it's called. We don't even know what part of Chicago it's in.
Vicky: Oh, come on, Jake. Are you with me on this or not?
Jake: Of course I'm with you on this . . . this and everything else, You want me to dial information or start searching for it on the net first?
Vicky: (gets all excited and kisses him) Oh, Good! I'm gonna take a shower and get ready. You try info first and then we'll go to the paper and look on the net. This is going to be sooo much fun, Jake!! (Goes in to the bathroom)
Jake: One of these days I am going to learn how to say ,"No" to that woman.
Vicky: (peeks out of the bathroom) Not if I can help it, Jake. And besides . . . why ruin such a perfect record? Especially when this works so well?? (goes back in to take a shower)
Jake: (picks up phone and dials) And I wouldn't want it any other way, Vick.
(At the Herald)
Jake: Okay . . . there are only 5 or 6 pizza places with Antonio's in the name in the greater Chicago area.
Vicky: So . . . we look 'em up and see which matches up to what we already know.
Jake : Most of them are on the North Side and . . . Hey . . . what about this on the . . .
Vicky: That's it, Jake! I know it is!! It sounds just like the type of place Becca and Nick would hang out in . . . (reading) "On the north side in Lincoln park, this Mom and Pop run pizzeria is big with students both day and night. Rumor has it you can get help with homework and your love life. Most of the customers are regulars and Antonio himself takes a great deal of pride in knowing each customer's favorite style of pizza."
Jake: So, we start there.
Vicky: Oh, Jake, I just know that's it. They'll have to know something..
(they arrive in Chicago and we see a sign with "Antonio's" over a door. All the tables have red and white checkered table cloths. One side of the restaurant dough is being made and there is a big blackboard with the menu on the wall. On the opposite side are the tables and above them several paintings obviously done by the same artist. Vicky seems entranced by one of them and she goes up to have a better look at it. It is a treehouse suspended high in a forest. It is signed by Becca in the lower right hand corner. Vicky notices the signature and goes to yank Jake over to see it)
Vicky: Jake!
Jake: What?!?!?
Vicky: The picture! Look!
Jake: Yeah, it's nice. Smells good in here. Let's get a table.
Vicky: This one right here. This is definitely the place, Jake. Will you look at the painting?!?!?
Jake: What?!? I told you it was nice . . .
Vicky: Look at the signature . . .
Jake: (Looks up) Damn!! The girl can draw, can't she?!?!
Kim: (a waitress) That's a real favorite . . . everyone likes it Seems to remind everyone of something. Haven't seen you two before. You new in town?
Vicky: Tell me about the picture . . . Who did it? Are they all by the same artist?
Kim: Well, yeah, supposedly they were all done by a girl who used to waitress here. I didn't know her, it was quite a while ago. They lived upstairs.
Vicky: They?
Kim: Yeah, her and her boyfriend. They were real favorites with Mom and Pop. They're both long gone though.
Vicky: Mom and Pop?
Kim: You are new, aren't you? Everyone calls the people who own this joint, Mom and Pop. Oh, geez!! You probably want something to eat, huh? What can I get you folks?
Jake: A pizza with . . .
VIcky: (interrupts) Green peppers and onions . . .
Kim: Okay. Be a while. Make yourselves at home. There's a juke box and if you're really interested in the art, I'll get Mom and Pop. They won't give you that painting but maybe another one. Anyway, they're the ones to talk to. Like I said I didn't even know her.
Vicky: Thanks, yeah. That would be good. (Kim leaves)
Jake: Will you calm down?
Vicky: What?? These people knew Becca and we know that!
Jake: Yes, but if you keep up with all of these questions, they're going to know something's up. Let me do it . . . these people need to be finessed a bit. You'll see.
Vicky: Jake, I . . . ("Mom" comes over)
Mom: I hear you folks like Becca's paintings.
Jake: She seems to have a lot of talent . . . we were wondering with so many galleries in the area . . . where twhe rest of her work is being sold?
Mom: (laughs) Not our Becca. We have all her stuff here, either on the walls or in the back.
Jake: Oh, really. Well, actually, my wife and I are always interested in the artists themselves. You know where this sort of talent comes from . . . you know the artistic personality and such.
Mom: Yes, well, I need to go and check on your pizza.
Vicky: (slugs him) Nice going, Jake. I'm telling you, I think we need to use a more direct approach with these people.
Jake: What? All of a sudden you're such a big believer in the truth? What're you gonna say? Umm . . . listen, I'm trying to check into the past of a friend of mine so my crazy sister doesn't lose it any more than she already has? So, can you tell me all the gory details of Becca's life?
Vicky: No, of course not! I'm just gonna say that . . . I'm doing an article . . . Yeah, an article on Becca. She's been discovered and some gallery is going to show her work and I'm doing a piece on her life before Bay City. Yeah . . .
Jake: That'll never . . .
(Mom comes back with silverware and drinks)
Vicky: Look, I'm sorry about before . . . My husband didn't mean to make you uncomfortable. Hi. I'm Vicky and this is my husband, Jake. He publishes the Herald out of Bay City and I'm writing an article on Becca Manderley and I was wondering if you could help me out. Some background info would be nice. I just want some stuff to put her bio and you know how she hates to talk about herself.
Mom: She's okay, then? We were soo worried . . .
Vicky: Of course, you were . . . No, she's fine. She's all out of that other mess.
Mom: Oh, THANK GOD. You're friends of hers then?
Vicky: Yeah, we are . . . she and her little boy, they're like family . . .
Mom: Her little boy?
Vicky: Oh yes. I'm sorry . . . you wouldn't know about him, would you? Here, let me see if I have a picture . . . here you go (Vicky takes out a picture of Becca and Nick with Josh on Nick's shoulders)
Mom: Antonio!!! Come here quickly!!!! The kids . . . These people know the children!!
Pop: (An older balding, plump sweet looking man comes over to Jake and Vicky's table) What's all this?
Mom: Look (shows him the picture) These lovely people know the kids . . .
Pop: (smiles with a tearin his eye) So where are they? Such a beautiful boy! Such a nice couple they always made . . . knew everything would work out . . .
Mom: Oh, you did not . . . you were ar worried as I was . . . Imaging two kids living upstairs all alone . . . no parents and such nightmares poor Becca had . . . who was it she used to call out for . . .
Pop: Oh, it wasn't as bad as all that, really, she was just scared. Marah . . . it was Marah she always called out for in her sleep
Mom: When she just disappeared like that . . . just one day gone . . . you remember.. Nick came down screaming (blushing a bit) poor boy wasn't even dressed. He was so frightened for her.
Jake: (suddenly realizing that once again his wife was right) Well, yeah, who could blame him? With that creep after her . . .
Pop: He doesn't bother her anymore, does he? Surely they did something . . . That first day when Nick brought her here . . . carried her unconscious body up the back stairs. Well, Mom thought she was dead . . .
Mom: I did not!!! Nick might've been in more than his share of trouble in those days, but he would never . . . just thought they needed help . . . she was so badly hurt . . . bruises and cuts everywhere. As if she'd lost a fight with some sort of ferocious animal!
Pop: And then she was soo frightened for months. I think it was six months before she even came downstairs. Poor little thing like a scared animal she was.
Vicky: (noticeably upset) He hasn't bothered her. She's fine now. How horrible! (remembering that Becca said her father was violent) Her own father . . . to have to deal with all of that . . . Why did Nick bring here here? You seem like lovely people and she was lucky to have you but . . .
Mom: She had nowhere else to go, he said. She'd been living with that "father" of hers for the past six months and since he was the one who . . .
Vicky: But her sisters, her brother . . . where had she been living before she went to live with her father?
Pop: Said it wasn't safe anywhere else. She'd been on the run as long as he'd known her and that this was just one in a long line of attempts on her life. She'd even changed her name to get away from him, but he always caught up to her. Nick said he was a real big shot and there was nowhere else he could think of to bring her.
Mom: Yeah, some big shot! terrorizing a poor girl her whole life . . .
Pop: But she's okay now. After she disappeared, I found her about a year and a half later . . . (suddenly stopping himself) Mom . . . go and check on their food . . . same as Becca's favorite. Right?
Vicky: Well, she speaks so highly of it.
(Mom leaves)
Pop: Didn't want Mom to hear this, but about a year and a half after she disappeared, someone came in and told me . . .
Jake: It's okay. The club . . . we know.
Pop: She's out of that then? Thank the Gods!
Mom: (returns with the pizza) Now eat up, you two . . . It's on the house . . . no charge.
Vicky: Oh, No, we couldn't really.
Pop: The picture for the pizza then?
Jake(smiles): It's yours (gives him the pic of Becca, Josh and Nick)
Mom: Let's let them eat in peace, We've already talked their ears off . . . if you need anything . . .
Vicky: Thanks.
(Mom and Pop go to the other tables still talking to each other)
Jake: They seem nice.
Vicky: Yeah, but Becca's life gets worse and worse.
Jake: I told you there was a reason she doesn't like to talk about it. What did you expect??
Vicky: Sounds like her father almost killed her.
Jake: And not for the first time either, they said.
Vicky: Poor thing. No wonder there's nothing on a "Rebecca Manderley" before 1984, she had to change her name just to get away from the creep. And even that didn't work.
Jake: That's why this stops now. Okay?
Vicky: But, Jake, we haven't proven a thing . . . we still . . .
Jake: Listen to me, Vick. This is too dangerous!
Vicky: But, Jake . . . we don't have anything that could help Marley.
Jake: No. Vicky . . . The old man could still be out there and if he finds out someone's been snooping into his daughter's past he could come after Becca and Josh.
Vicky: So, we'll be careful.
Jake: Vicky . . .
Vicky: I know, I know, but if we can find out where the creep is, Becca could be free of him for good
Jake: Try and listen here, Vicky. You wanted to prove that Marley's wrong about her. Well, we did that. Donna would never have let Marley associate with anyone like Becca's family . . . and anyway it sounds like Becca has been running so long she didn't have time for friends at all as a kid . . . especially not ones who were as sheltered as Marley was.
Vicky: How do you know that? She said that Becca's Dad was some sort of "Big shot". What if he was one of my grandfather's cronies or something?
Jake: No. Vicky, NO WAY. We drop this NOW. I mean it, Vicky.
Vicky: But, Jake . . .
Jake: NOT HAPPENING VICK. This is way too much. Someone is going to get hurt. This guy tried to kill a little girl, Vicky. Are you getting this? His own daughter, for God's sake, Vick. Not just once, but several times it sounds like. Okay? You got it?
Vicky: Yeah, I get it. The guy does make Grant sound like an angel, doesn't he?
Jake: That's just my point, Vicky. Even Grant would never . . . did you hear what she said . . . like a wild animal . . .
Vicky: I know, I heard her too. She said Becca looked . . . she must've been really torn to shreds. I wonder how Nick got Becca medical care if she wouldn't even come downstairs for six months?
Jake:Vicky . . .
Vicky: I promise no more sneaking around Chicago, Jake. I'm sure it only gets worse from here. I won't do it. I promise. But, we should find her sisters, at least Jake. They probably think she's been dead all these years. They deserve the truth, Jake.
Jake: Vicky!!!!!
Vicky: Come on . . . after all Becca's been through . . . she told me there was one sister she was close to . . . (kisses him) For Becca?
Jake: No more trips to Chicago!! Only stuff you can do from Bay City!
Vicky: (holds up her left hand and puts her right over the pizza) I swear on this pizza, I, Vicky McKinnon, will only do stuff that I can do from a computer. Any leg work necessary will not be done by me.
Jake: (kisses her forehead) You . . .
Vicky: (smiles and takes another piece of pizza) But that's why you love me . . . Deal?
jake: I can't believe I'm agreeing to this . . . deal.
