Jake: (laughs) Yeah, I
know. (kisses her stomach and then her mouth) Did you ever think I, Jake,
"the snake", McKinnon would be having a discussion with someone's stomach?!?!
About color schemes no less!!
Vicky: (laughs and kisses him) Yeah, well we've come a long way, baby! You did bring
up an interesting point though, we do need to get the nursery all fixed up. Guess
that means I'll have to go shopping!
Jake: And I can see how upset you are about that!
Vicky: Wanna come?
Jake: Today . . . I . . . uh . . .
Vicky: You have to work.
(crosses her arms over her chest) You know, I'm starting to be a little
jealous of Chris!! I think he sees you more than I do!
Jake: It's just this one story, Vick. There's just something about it, I just
can't put my finger on . . . It's important, baby.
Vicky: (teasingly) Yeah, well, I think you love that paper more than you love me.
Jake: Aww, come on, Vicky. You know that's not true . . . (kisses her)
Vicky: Then come with me today.
Jake: I can't . . . really, I am sorry. . .
Vicky: Okay, so you can't . . . (kisses him all over and puts one hand on her
stomach and the other) You sure?
Jake: Please, Vicky . . . Don't do this to me . . .
Vicky: (still kissing him) Do what, baby?
Jake: I really can't today . . . but . . .
Vicky: But what?
Jake: But how about we go away for a couple of days?
Vicky: Really? No, paper?!?
Jake: No paper. We'll bring the kids.
Vicky: And Nick and Becca?
Jake: Sure. Even Marley if you want . . .
Jake: So am I forgiven?
Vicky: I'll think about it.
Jake: You and Becca go and do some serious damage and come back and tell me all about it.
Vicky: I guess I'll have to . . . Hmph!
Jake: You are so cute when you don't get your way!
Vicky: Oh, go take a shower, McKinnon! I have to make arrangements for my day alone
since . . .
Jake: (kisses her) I'll make it up to you . . . to both of you. I promise!!
Vicky: You bet you will! (kisses him. Jake goes into the bathroom)
(Vicky picks up the phone and calls Becca)
Becca: Hello?
Vicky: Hi, Becca? Whatre you doing today?
Becca: Hi Vicky. Nothing much. I have to work today and Nick has this crazy
desire to show Joshua the Herald . . . so after work I'm pretty free. And don't tell
Donna, but . . .
Vicky: You have no desire to study, huh? GOOD. How does shopping sound?
Becca: Shopping? For something other than the bare essentials of life? That'd be a
new concept.
Vicky: Well, allow me to introduce you to the joys of shopping frivolously!
Becca: Cool! What're we getting?
Vicky: Baby stuff. You and me, girlfriend, are going to do the nursery today.
Becca: I'd love to, but . . . don't you want Jake to do that with you?
Vicky: He says he can't today . . . don't get me started.
Becca: Well, sure. Sounds like fun. The whole nursery, Vick?
Vicky: Yep. All except the cradle.
Becca: Today? Can we do all of that in one day?
Vicky: Oh, I have sooo much to teach you . . .
Becca: Why do I think I'm gonna enjoy this way more than Donna's lessons?
Vicky: Okay. So, I'll get dressed, you get dressed, and get Josh ready to go with
Nick and meet me here.
Becca: See you in a bit.
Vicky: Bye. (hangs up) (talking the baby) Well, at least somebody knows how to
have fun around here. Looks like it's going to be a girl's day out. That okay
with you? Yeah, me too. Your Daddy will just miss out on all the fun you, me,
and Aunt Becca are going to have.
(A few hours later. Scene opens at the Harbor Club. Donna is standing at the
bar looking over some sort of paper with writing on it. Becca is waiting on tables.
Every now and again Becca looks over at Donna. Becca finishes taking the
table's order walks over towards the kitchen past Donna)
Donna:Good. Now for some Math.
Becca:Come on. Haven't we done enough for today?
Donna:You need to work on your math skills for the test, darling . . .
Becca: You know, I don't know why . . . I never needed it before!
Donna: Yes, well, I have doubts about that . . . How could you or anyone else get through
this life without knowing how to multiply or divide, or do percentages . . . I mean how do
you leave a tip! Figure out the price of a dress on sale . . .
Becca: Since when do YOU buy anything on sale?
Donna: I dont, but other people do! And THEY need to know how much 20%
percent off is!!
Becca: I can add and subtract. That's all you ever really need. And I've never
been one to eat out much ya know. And a new dress?!?! Try baby food and
diapers!
Donna: Really, the things you have missed . . . honestly, I don't know how . . .
Becca: Believe it or not, Donna, most people's lives do not revolve around the new line at
Jacqueline's.
Donna: Really . . . so what's 9x7?
Becca: Donna . . .
Donna: 9x7
Becca: Hmph! 63
Donna: Good. 12x11?
Becca: (squinting her eyes) Ummm . . . wait . . . 121?
Donna: Good girl! 8x7?
Becca: 56. ok? Can I put this order in please?
Donna: Go right ahead. When you come back out, we'll do something else.
Becca: (all bright eyed) Really? No more math today?
Donna: No more multiplication tables. I think we should move on to . . . hmm . . .
Percentages!! We need to do something about your wardrobe anyway.
Becca: DONNA!
Donna: Put the order in dear, our guests are waiting . . . (Vicky comes in and walks over
to Donna)
Vicky: Wheres Becca? I thought she was working today?
Donna: She is and she's busy, Victoria. Don't you even say hello to your mother?
Vicky: Sorry. Hi Mom. Where's Becca?
Donna: She'll be right back, she just went to put in an order. But, she is BUSY,
Victoria. (Becca comes out of the kitchen)
Becca: Vicky! I bet you need me urgently to do something . . . don't you?
PLEASE . . . say you do . . .
Vicky: (with that Vicky look in her eye) Actually . . .
Donna: You're not going anywhere! She's not done here, Victoria.
Vicky: Oh. Well, when's your shift over, BECCA?
Becca: (staring at Donna) 5 minutes.
Donna: You need to work on some percentage problems, and then some Chemistry I think.
Vicky: Chemistry? Trust me, Mom, she's got that one covered. You should see
her with . . .
Becca: Vicky!
Vicky: (in much the tone of a little girl) What? Aww, come on, Mom. Can't
Becca come out to play?
Becca: Yeah, can't I go over to a friend's house? Please . . . I've done all my
homework and I'll work extra hard in school tomorrow!! Please?
Donna: Girls . . .
(Vicky and Becca bat their collective eyelashes at Donna and Becca holds her hands up as
if to plead with Donna)
Donna: Oh, all right, how could I refuse these faces . . .
Vicky: (kisses Donna on the cheek) Thanks, Mom!
Becca: (kisses Donna on the other cheek) Yeah, thanks, Mo . . . umm . . . Donna!
(all laugh)
Donna: Don't stay out too late, girls! Be good!
Becca&Vicky: We always are!!! (they leave)
Donna: (smiles after them) Have fun, girls.
(Scene opens that night as Jake is coming home from the office)
Jake: Vic...
Vicky: Hey, I'm up here.
Jake comes upon the nursery and Vic is sprawled out on the floor amongst tons of pink
fabric swatches and furniture brochures. Things are thrown all over the floor. Swatches
are held up with pins on the walls. There is a pile of pink sleepers sitting in the
corner.
Jake: Looks like someone
had fun today! (He bends down to kiss her.) Lots of pink here, Vic.. Are you
sure this little one is going to be a girl? (rubs her belly and bends down to kiss it.)
Vicky: I have never been so sure of anything in my life... except maybe how much I love
you...(she kisses him back...) So look at all we found today. What do you think of this?
(she holds up a fabric swatch of pink flowers or this furniture she shoves a
brochure at him.) I kind of like this one. (Holding up a swatch of fabric with
pink flowers and pink gingham.) I also bought a few sleepers for her and this
adorable little leopard snow suit. It was so cute I couldn't resist. Look . . .
How about this stroller . . . It is great for all terrain.
Jake: Would that be in case you were doing a little hiking through town! Hey, slow
down, girl! Looks like a Pepto Bismol explosion in here. You think you went
overboard a bit... (he laughs...)
Vicky: (getting all pouty...) You don't like what I picked out. Fine! If that
is the case you should have come with me. (She gets up in a huff.) It is okay . . .
I guess it doesn't matter to you where she sleeps or what she wears. (tears are
running down her face.)
Jake: Hey, now I didn't say I didn't like it. Don't get yourself all worked
up. (he goes to put his arms around her and she steps back and turns her back to him.)
Vicky... come on. Wait a minute, Vic. What are you upset about?
You are blowing this way out of proportion.
Vicky: You don't even care what our baby's room looks like. All you care about
lately is that newspaper and this story. I just wanted her to have a beautiful place
to sleep and you act like it is no big deal.
Jake: Vicky, I never said I don't care. Of course, I care I care about every single
detail of this baby's world. I want her world to be perfect. I just was making
a joke. Man, you are so touchy lately.
Vicky: (Trying to stay mad at him but giving in to his charm slowly..) Well, you
know, I am pregnant.
Jake: Really, I hadn't noticed . (he reaches over to her again and takes her
in his arms... ) I am sorry for I was teasing you about all this.( he kisses her and
wipes away a tear streaming down her face.) Show me what you like. I want to
see it all.
Vicky: You do? Really? (she hugs him really tight.) I love you.. okay,
well. (she goes off showing him fabrics and baby bedding. Wall paper furniture.
Things Jake didn't even realize they needed..)
Jake: What exactly is this contraption and tell me again why our daughter needs
this?!?
Vicky: It is a bouncy seat with a motor built in so it will move to help her sleep.
Jake: What? Now they already now she can't sleep?!?
Vicky: Jake... if you don't want to know...
Jake: Okay, okay, I am sorry . . . go on.
Vicky: Well, it is believed that the motion helps a colicky baby so they put the
motor in and the gentle motion helps keep the baby sleeping.
Jake: Okay, well, sleeping baby is a good thing so definitely pick this out for us.
Vicky: Okay, do you like this fabric with this furniture or this one.. (showing him two
different swatches and a two different changing tables.)
Jake: I have one request for our daughters room.
Vicky: Okay, what .. Please, no footballs or wild animals please.
Jake: No, Vic, NO footballs. (he steps out of the room for a minute and comes back
with a set of tiny bells... He shows the bells to Vicky.. she starts to cry again. ) Baby,
don't cry... Bridget's bells for our Bridget. (He ties a pink satin ribbon on the
chimes and walks over to the corner.) Here this will be perfect right here. (He
places the chimes on a tiny hanger in the ceiling... the pink ribbon dangles from the
chimes.) Now she will always have Bridget near her.
Vicky: You are so amazing. I love you...I love you ... I love you.
Jake: My contribution to the room.. I think it is perfect. So do we need to
pick this out tonight? I was thinking...
Vicky: Oh God, No, not that.. What were you thinking, Mr. McKinnon?
(she snuggles up next to him putting her arms around his neck.)
Jake: Well, remember this morning when I promised you I would make it up to
you? Well...
Vicky: TELL ME...
Jake: Well, how about we pack up the boys, get Nick and Becca and Josh and head up
to the cabin for a few days? We can ice skate and sled. Roast marshmallows.
Drink hot chocolate by the fire. We can take sleigh rides
into town and all curled up under down comforters for some really great scary movies.
Then, after a few days the kids go home with Donna and the four of us stay up
there for some grown up fun.
Vicky: What did you have in mind, Mr. McKinnon?
Jake: Well, how about a creative game of poker, a little food, family and whatever else
might come up? I was thinking...
Vicky: Well, I got to tell you ... I am liking it so far. (she kisses him again
running her hands up and down his chest and through his hair. Suddenly the baby kicks.)
Jake! Hurry put your hand here! (She takes his hand and places it on her
belly. All of a sudden they feel Bridget kick. Jake turns around and kisses Vicky.)
Jake: Was that her.. Was that my little soccer player?
Vicky: Yeah the doctor said I should start to feel her moving around soon. She
must have liked your idea of a little holiday up north.
Jake: Wow, that was incredible.. make her do it again. I want to feel it again!
Vicky: Jake, I can't make her do it again. She has a mind of her own.
Jake: Just like her Mommy. (Jake places his hands over Vicky's stomach and Vicky
entwines her hands in his. Together they feel the baby kick again. Tears are running
down Jake's face.) God, this is incredible.
Vicky: Just you wait, McKinnon, the best is yet to come.
Jake: I can't wait.. .so back to my plan... How about long nights of love by the fire..
Vicky: HHMMM . . . Jake that sounds perfect.. (she kisses him.) It will be so
great to get away with just us. No paper No interruptions.
Jake: I promise no interruptions. NO Herald. NO Chris. NO anything but you,
me, our kids , great friends. It will be perfect.
Vicky: Count me in, Mister. (He kisses her passionately running his fingers down her
neck and chest....) There is just one thing..
Jake: Okay, Vicky, spill it. What is the problem? It sounds like a perfect get
away to me. What more could you want.. Your friends, your kids and your
absolutely adorable husband.
Vicky: Well, of course, it sounds perfect. (She kisses him gently.)
There is no one I would rather spend time with then you and the boys but Jake . . .
The Love cabin. I don't know if I can go to that cabin. Do you really think
that is the best place for us? For the kids, and for that matter my
mother?!?
Jake: What do you mean? Are you thinking because of Shane and Michael?
Vicky: What else could I mean? Jake that was such a horrible night for all of
us. I hurt you so badly. It almost destroyed us. I hurt so many people
that night. Look what I did...
Jake: (stopping her in mid sentence. He looks deep into her eyes.) You didn't do
anything. It was a horrible, tragic, accident, Vicky. You had no idea it
would end up like that.
Vicky: Jake, two men died because of me. Everything that has gone wrong for
this family has happened because of that night. I lost my father. Shane died.
The entire humiliation of Lila's fake journal. My God! She had you
believing I slept with another man. I destroyed all the trust you had in me. I
even let Donna convince me to do something we promised each other we would never do.
I lied to you, Jake. That can never happen again. I can't even
begin to tell you what that night did to Marley. Everything that has happened to
Marley happened because of that night.
Jake: (He takes both her hands in his.) Nothing you do could ever make
me stop loving you. Okay, so I was stupid for a while but that doesn't mean I didn't
love you every second of every day we were apart.
Vicky: You are a forgiving man. (She kisses him.) I don't deserve you. I never
have.
Jake: (Smiling down at her belly) . It is me who doesn't deserve you. You are the
most amazing incredible woman I have ever met and it is me who is blessed. How could
I have doubted you Vicky? I didn't trust you enough to believe that you loved me.
I let my man ego get in the way. It was just as much my fault as yours.
Vicky: I gave you ever reason to doubt me. I lied to you. I lied to you
about where I was and who I was with. Then I let Donna convince me that the lie was better
than the truth. If I had just stuck with my own heart I would
have known that a lie would ever be better than the truth. It almost killed me
inside to lie to you Jake. You know that don't you?
Jake: Vicky, I know. Let's not talk about it anymore. Let's go to the
cabin together and face these demons. Remember what Bridget said. .... Rely on
Jake...
Vicky: (she kisses him again with passion and intensity.) I do baby. You
know I do. Forever.
Jake: Vicky, we are about to experience the most incredible thing between two
people. It is time we move past that night and Shane. You know I love you more than
I ever have and together we will go through that door and create new happy memories
together. Look, I don't like to remember that night and that time but I know
without it we would not be here about to share this miracle. (He places his hands on
her stomach and kisses her lips softly.)
