The
following scene takes place right after their reunion scene as it
played out. They are still in bed.
Vicky: God, I'm glad things are back to normal.
Jake: Me, too. I missed (eyes all over her. one finger is tracing
from the tip of her forehead down to her chest) all this.
(Kisses her)
Vicky: I kept a little something for you.
Jake: I did too, come here, baby. (They kiss passionately)
Vicky: Not THAT!!! ( Jake looks at her strangely) Well, okay,
that too. But I meant this... (shows him his wedding ring
which is suspended from a chain around her neck) I kept it
close to my heart, just like you always have been.
Jake (puts his hand on her chest): And that's always where I want
to be.
Vicky: ( starting to take the necklace off) Jake McKinnon, I love
you. Will you do me the honor of spending the rest of
your life with me?
Jake: I never should've taken that off, Vick. We wasted so
much time because of my stupidity. I'm sorry, Alice Blue.
Vicky: Well, I'll just put this back on your finger and we can
pick up where we left off.
Jake: Not quite yet, baby.
Vicky: What? I thought
Jake: I don't want to pick up RIGHT where we left off.
Vicky: (starting to tear up and getting quite nervous) Why not?
I thought everything was ok between us?
Jake: I need to explain some things to you.
Vicky: No, you don't. Come on, we're here, we're together, that's
all that matters.
Jake: You need to know why I reacted the way I did.
Vicky: I know why. You were hurt and I was stupid.
Let's not talk about it.
Jake: We HAVE to talk about it Vick.
Vicky (trying to kiss him out of it) Why? Come on, baby.
Jake: No. Vicky (pushing her away) We need to do this so we can
move on.
Vicky: It doesn't matter.
Jake: Yes, honey, it does.
Vicky: (crossing her arms in frustration) Okay, okay.
You feel like you need to talk about the WORST thing
that ever happened to me, to us. Fine!
Jake: Well, you know I've never really believed you were really
mine. Not really, I mean, you know, that I could get THAT
lucky. To be happy with you, the woman I have always loved,
always wanted.
Vicky: Jake
Jake: Don't interrupt me, okay? Let me just get this all
out.
Vicky: Sorry.
Jake: The bad stuff's just always been easier to believe, you
know? And so when the trial happened and I heard Marley
talking about you and Shane being together, It just made more
sense.. More sense than this. I was always kinda waiting
for the other shoe to drop.. Since the wedding when he
showed up, I couldn't believe you really chose me. Waiting
for you at the swings, I was sure you weren't going to show up,
and when you did, it was like a dream. One that I never
wanted to wake up from. And then when he showed up at the
wedding, I figured, "OK. Time to wake up, McKinnon."
But you stayed with me again. I couldn't believe my
luck. And all this time, I just kept waiting for you to
leave me, for the dream to end. And so when it looked like
it had, It just seemed more real than all of this.
Vicky: More real? I know I've hurt you, Jake. But I swear,
I've never loved ANYONE the way I love you. All I want is
to spend the rest of our lives together. Why can't I make
you believe that?
Jake:
That's all I want too, Vick. It's just always seemed like
of us is always more into this relationship than the other.
When we were kids and we first came to Bay City, it was
you. I loved you then, but I wanted so many other things.
Vicky: And now? You're saying what? That you love me
more than I love you?
Jake: Sometimes it just feels like that. My entire world
revolves around you. You are the reason I was put on this
earth. The reason I wake up, the reason for everything I
do. You're the reason I exist. I'm sure of it.
I just know you don't feel that way, and it scares me
sometimes.
Vicky: How could you say that? I couldn't live without you.
When you were gone, I couldn't breathe. Sometimes I
would think about you, and the very IDEA of not ever being
together again, I felt like I was having a heart attack.
Jake: But, that's when I was gone. When I'm here we feel
differently about each other, I know that, and it's ok. As
long as we're together, I don't care.
Vicky: NO, no it's not. Not if you think I don't love you.
Jake: I know you love me. It's just, let's not do this anymore.
I'm sorry.
Vicky: (getting all huffy) You brought it up!! You think
that just because I don't go and steal Christmas trees.
Jake: Hey! Chris and I "liberated" that
Christmas tree!!! AND I left loads o' cash!!!
Vicky: Fine! You think that just because I don't
"liberate" Christmas trees from Lassiter, or
decorate the streets to look like Venice, or recreate our Prom in
the Harbor Club, I don't love you? Well, you're wrong
there, buddy! I don't DO all of those things because I do
love you!
Jake: How do you figure that? I did all of those things to
show you how I felt about you, how much I love you. I put
it all out there on the line for everyone to see. Hell,
practically the whole town knew how I felt about you before you
did!!!
Vicky: (Putting her hands on his face and crying a little)
I know. it's one of the things I LOVE most about you,
your bravery..
Jake: Bravery? I was just making a fool of myself over you!
Vicky: You think you're the only one who gets scared?
The only one who thinks this is all too good to be true?
The only one who thinks the bad stuff is easier to believe?
I wake up every day wondering if this is the day you'll
finally leave me. Do you know that? In my whole life,
Jake McKinnon, you're the only person who has never really left
me. IN MY WHOLE LIFE!!! You and Bridget were the only
ones I was ever really sure loved me. I don't even really
believe my mother or sister love me. I still live in fear
that the boys are going to tell me they want to leave and live
with Jamie and Grant! When we all thought you were dead, do
you know what a mess my life was?!? I felt sooo alone, and
so scared. All the time!!! And no one, not my
parents, not Ryan, not even Bridget really understood, or could
help. Jake, I couldn't get out of the bed, leave the house,
or even think without knowing you were here. I would just
be too scared.
Jake: You're not scared of anything!!!
Vicky: Not really. It's just with you here, I know if I
screw up, you'll always save me. Lila hit on my one real
fear, losing you. She said she was going to destroy me, and
she almost succeeded. All my life people have been trying
to destroy me, but none of them knew how. They couldn't do it.
Not my grandfather, hell, not even Grant, and he certainly
has spent enough time trying!! He's been trying to wipe me
off the planet for years!!! Lila took the one thing I can't
live without. YOU!! Even Grant saw that. I
think that's why he was so nice to me. Even he was worried
about me. Why can't you see it?
Jake: I never. . . You'd be fine without me, Vick.
Vicky: No, I wouldn't. I know I don't show it like
you do but . . .
Jake: With Ryan and Shane you did
Vicky: And look what happened!!! I can't let myself be that
open where it comes to you. If I ever lost you, there would
be nothing left. I would, in essence, die without you.
That's why it took me soo long to realize I should be with
you, had to be with you. I was too scared. I had to
overcome my fear. That's why I turned to Shane I think. It
was easier. I never felt for him what I feel for you.
I would never feel for him the way I do you. If I let
all of my feelings for you out in the open and something
happened, It would be over for me. I wouldn't be Vicky
anymore. I guess I'm just not as brave as you are.
Jake: I'm not going anywhere, baby, not ever. You don't
have to be scared. Not now, not ever again. OK?
Vicky: I just love you so much (Crying)
Jake: (He takes her in his arms as she continues to sob and tremble) Don't cry Vicky. I'm right here. I'm sorry, I didn't
Vicky: (looking up at him still crying with the eyes of a lost, hurt child) I just can't lose you, Jake. I'm sorry I've made you feel
Jake:
It's okay. I understand, Vick. Shh!!! It's
going to be all right. I'm sorry I brought all of this up.
I guess I just forgot how much you do feel. I'm
sorry baby.
Vicky: I'm not. I want you to know how much I love you,
need you. I should've had the courage to tell you before.
Jake: And I should've known better. Let me have it.
Vicky: (kissing him and recovering a bit) Okay!
Jake: The ring, Vicky! I meant the ring.
Vicky: Oh!! First I'm not demonstrative enough, and now I'm
too demonstrative!! You sure you want a mess like me?
Jake: You're my mess, and that's all that matters.
Vicky: (slipping the ring back on his finger) I love you, Jake
McKinnon.
The next morning
Jake is coming downstairs when he sees the boys frantically
searching for something and in the process making a huge mess.
Jake: (to himself) Oh, it's good to be home! (as he very
nearly gets hit by a flying object they boys have tossed in their
search.)
Steven: C'mon Kirk. It has to be here SOMEWHERE!!! We've
gotta find it..
Jake: Whoa! Where's the fire?
Kirk: (Quizzically) There's no fire anymore, Jake. Remember
that was before we went to New York.
Steven: That's not what he means, doofus!!! He wants to
know why we're making such a mess.
Kirk: I'm not a doofus!! (to Jake) we're looking for
something.
Steven: He knows that!
Kirk: You said!!
Jake: Slow down, guys! Tell me what we're looking for and
maybe I can help. But let's try and keep it down, ok?
Mom had kind of a rough night last night and I want her to
sleep a while.
Steven and Kirk: I'll tell him (looking at each other annoyedly)
Jake: How about you both tell me?
Both: Well, we figured since you're home now, we'd put the sign
back up.
Jake: What sign?
Kirk: The one Nana took down cause it made Mommy cry.
Steven: He doesn't need to hear that, Kirk! Umm, (nervously
looking at Jake) You ARE home for good, right, Jake?
Jake: Yes, I am, FOREVER AND EVER. What did the sign say?
Steven: It's the "Jake and Vicky's place" sign that was
on the door.
Kirk: We haven't seen it since you were over here playing
football with us that one time.
Steven: Yeah, and Mom tackled you and you didn't even have the
ball!!!
Kirk: Yeah, that was weird. I guess she didn't know you didn't
have the ball..
Steven: YES, she did.
Jake: (with a wink for Steven) That's enough, boys. Where
did Nana put it? You guys are right. We've gotta get
that sign back up where it belongs. Before Mom gets up
would be good. (All three continue to look.)
They spend about an hour looking before they give up and Jake
goes into the kitchen to make breakfast for everyone!!
Kirk: We gotta find that sign, Jake.
Steven: I really thought Nana put it in the closet.
Jake: Don't worry, we'll find it. Just later, okay?
Vicky (who has just come downstairs) Find what? (Jake and
Vicky look at each other they way that only THEY can.)
Jake: Feeling better this morning?
Vicky: (starting to tear up) As long as you're here, I'm fine.
(looking at the boys and recovering quickly) Right, guys?
Everything's great! Now what are we looking for?
Jake: Nothing.
Boys: But, Jake
Jake:
Almost time for some breakfast, boys. Put the plates out
and get the syrup! It's definitely a pecan waffle morning!!
Boys:YEAH!!
Vicky: (moving over to him) Good Morning, Jake.
Jake: Good morning, Oh, most beautiful woman in the world.
(kisses her)
Vicky: This is real, isn't it? Everything's going to be
okay, right?
Jake: This is it, baby. You, me, the rug rats. FOR EVER.
Vicky: Oh! I bet I know what you were looking for! (She leaves to
go back upstairs for a sec and returns with the sign.)
Steven: Hey! Where'd you find that?
Vicky: (looking at Jake) In my bedroom.
Steven: What was it doing in there, Mom?
Kirk: Yeah. Nana took it down because she said it hurt you
to look at it.
Steven: I told you to stop saying that!!!
Vicky: It's okay, honey. I kept it in my night table so I
could look at it whenever I wanted to. (Looking lovingly at
Jake) Sometimes I would sleep with it.
Kirk: But, Nana said.
Vicky: Sometimes I do stuff that Nana doesn't understand,
sweetie.
Jake: Well, shall we put it back where it belongs?
All: Yeah! Absolutely!! Right Now!!!
They hang it on the door and come back in and have
breakfast together.. Jake and Vicky barely stop holding
hands long enough to eat. The boys go upstairs to get
dressed while Jake and Vicky clear the table.
Vicky: (looking at the mantle) There's just one thing missing
now.
Jake: (coming out of the kitchen to see what's wrong) What?
Vicky: There's just one thing missing to make this home perfect
again. But, as you boys have made such a mess, I don't know
that I'll be able to find it!
Jake: Whats that?
Vicky: The truest words Bridget ever said, and the sweetest thing
you ever gave me. The "Rely on Jake" sign.
It belongs on the mantle.
Jake: Well, if we can't find it, I can always make a new one at
"The Herald"
Vicky: I guess so, but I want the original.
Steven runs back upstairs after overhearing all this from the
stairs.
Jake: Come here, you. All we need, we have right here.
(Kisses her)
Steven: (returns with the sign) It sure is good to see you guys
acting normal again. Here, Mom.
Vicky: Where'd you find this?
Steven: What? You're the only one who's allowed to sleep
with a sign?
Vicky: Oh, honey.
Steven: (trying to act real grown up) Not that I ever for one
second thought that you weren't coming back, Jake. I just
needed to look at it every once in a while. You know, to be
sure.
Jake: Well, put it back up there, kiddo!
Steven: I can't reach. Can you?
Jake: Always, Buddy. I'm right here. (He lifts Steven up and they
put the "Rely on Jake" sign back on the mantle where it
belongs.)
Jake kisses Vicky and then Steven as Kirkland comes back
downstairs.
Kirk: Hey! What's everyone doing?
Vicky: Nothing, sweetie. Come here.
Jake: Okay. We all set now? Everyone all better?
(everyone sits on the couch) Feeling nice and safe?
Vicky: (all wrapped up in his arms) I'm good.
Steven and Kirk: (all wrapped up in both parents arms) YEP!
Jake: Sure we didn't forget anything?
Kirk: How about you?
Jake: How about me?
Kirk: Yeah! You ok, too, Jake? You didn't answer your
own question!!
Jake: (kisses Kirk on his forehead) I am better than ok, Kirk.
I have everything I ever wanted.
