A Dream Come True, Part 3

Scene 4

Setting: Jake and Vicky’s house in Oakdale

Jake escorts Vicky inside and Vicky is amazed at what she sees. The house is full of toys for the babies.

Vicky: Jake! What is all this?

Jake: You like? I guess I kinda went overboard, but I couldn’t help myself. Every time I went past a toy store, I had to get something for the babies. It was my way of keeping them alive. I couldn’t let go, not yet.

Vicky: (with tears in her eyes) I love you, McKinnon!

Jake: And I love you. And if you’ll excuse me, I am going to make a certain phone call to 2 little boys I know.

Vicky: Don’t tell them I’m here, I want them to be surprised.

Jake smiles and leaves the room.

Vicky looks around at all the toys in the room. She gets a serious look on her face and remembers what happened. She starts to cry as Jake walks in.

Jake: Vicky! Jamie said he would have the boys on the ne . . . (he sees Vicky wiping tears from her face) Is something wrong? Is it the babies?

Jake leads Vicky to the couch and helps her get comfortable.

Vicky: No, they are fine. We still have some time before the babies show up. I just wanted to tell you what happened, why I was gone for so long.

Jake: Vick, you don’t have to do this now. We have lots of time for this.

Vicky: (interrupting Jake) Yes, I do! I want too.

Jake smiles and pulls Vicky closer to him.

Vicky: When Lucinda called me, I was so excited. I had missed you so much. We got to the airport and the bodyguard had to make a call so I boarded the plane without him. He was gone a long time, and eventually the pilot came out and told me that the bodyguard had some kind of family emergency and he would not be joining us. I was already on the plane safely so I just told the pilot to go. (saying through her tears) I didn't want to wait any longer to see you!

Jake: Honey . . .

Vicky: I’m fine, I just have to get through this. (she squeezes Jake’s hand) The plane took off and everything was perfect until the pilot said we were leaking fuel, and we had to make an emergency landing to fix the fuel line. Jake, I was so scared!

Jake: (hugs Vicky) I’m sorry sweetie. I’m sorry I wasn’t there for you.

Vicky: We were on our way to safety and then there was this explosion that came out of nowhere. I don’t know what made me look out the window, but there was this huge cloud of smoke coming from the lake, and the wing of the plane was half gone. I fastened my seat belt and I held on to the babies so tight. I thought of you and the boys and the fact that I may never see all of you again was just too much . . .

Jake: But you’re here, Vicky! And I’m never going to let you go ever again. I love you so much!

Vicky: I love you, too, Jake! We were lucky though, we managed to get to the runway but the impact of the plane hitting the ground threw me from my seat and my leg was caught underneath the seat. I couldn’t move. I didn’t notice the pain so much because I was so worried about the babies, I couldn’t think of anything else. Just when I thought I was a goner, the pilot, Greg, came to my rescue. He pulled me out from under the seat and carried me off the plane to safety. I really owe my life and the babies to him. He was, literally, a life-saver. He got me to the hospital and the doctors say that if I had stayed any longer in there, the babies wouldn’t have survived.

Jake: Thank God they did! And I am so glad that Greg was there for you, Vick!! But I don’t understand, if you made it out alive, why didn’t you get in touch with me? I would have come and gotten you.

Vicky: But I did, Jake. I called the office and they told me you were in London with the boys. I didn’t want to leave a message. I wanted to tell you in person. And then . . . (Vicky starts sobbing)

Jake: Vicky? (putting his arm around her) What happened next?
